| A Thomas Tilling service which ran from Eltham to Blackheath. This
bus originally ran to connect the town of Eltham with the London trains
at Blackheath. Blackheath station was opened in 1849, Eltham didn't get
a station at Well Hall until 1895. Eltham did have a station in 1866, but
it was some way off at Mottingham. It was originally called Eltham, but
its name was changed in 1927 to Mottingham.
The bus is of the later 'Garden Seat' style, these were forward facing slatted seats 'outside' i.e. the top deck, and altogether seated 26 passengers. These replaced the earlier 'knifeboard' seating arrangement which were back to back down the length of the top deck. These older buses were known as this because of the resemblance to a Victorian knife cleaning board.Garden seat buses were introduced around 1885, and were all replace by about 1914 by the new motor buses. |
