Vivisection
Commercial products are often tested on many animals including rabbits, rats, cats and dogs. The reason given for this is often that products have to be tested for safety before being allowed to go on sale. This is true, but most ingredients have been tested so often on animals in the past, that it is pointless to keep re-doing them. I have started to write to companies to ask them their position on vivisection. The replies I receive are available here. The products are tested by smearing them on the eye, skin or even under the skin of animals. Typical tests exposed recently involved beagles being force-fed weed killer by tubes forced down the throat, despite the product having been in use for years. A fire extinguisher fluid was found to cause liver and kidney damage in animals, but not in humans. Also, benzene and asbestos - both killers if you are human - pass as safe in animal tests. Surely that is enough to make most people realise that the tests are pointless. This government has made it illegal to test on animals for cosmetic products in the UK (but not illegal to sell products in the UK tested on animals abroad).
